The debut EP from London's Mankato, otherwise known as Darren Berry, is a nicely left-field, quirky affair. Like Aqualung on the happy pills, Berry's talent is obvious to see on this release.
Lead track Flesh And Bone strums along nicely, recalling Badly Drawn Boy at his finest. Berry's voice projects some urgency into proceedings, and some swirly keyboard sounds make sure this isn't too mainstream. The remaining three tracks are in a similar vein, and the overall result is highly impressive.
We may not get to see just how good Mankato is until his debut album is released in the autumn, but this is a fine starting point.
