"When I first set out to write a record, my outlook was positive", sings Will Pearson at the start of The Maple State's new single.

It's easy to see why, if this is what he was writing. For The Temperate Lives may begin as a relatively standard verse-chorus format, but as soon as it hits the chorus it goes way beyond its perceived design, inviting the neighbours in for an anthemic singalong.

It works well, particularly when he strips the chorus back to a solo utterance and says "we don't deserve anything from anyone". Nice to note such modesty - and a tune that sticks, along with its message. Whether that translates through the whole of their debut album is another story.
