Maria Willson - Mr Alibi (BMG)

release date: 20 October 2003

Maria Willson - Mr Alibi
A bit of anthemic pop for you from 21 year-old Maria Willson. She has already enjoyed top 30 success with the illiterately entitled Chooza Looza, and has supported the likes of rock giants (in the loosest possible sense of the word) Busted in recent months.

Taking these facts into consideration, Mr Alibi sounds pretty much exactly as you'd expect. She fits nicely into the pop-rock chick genre, alongside the more established names like Amy Studt and Canadian sk8er grrrl Avril Lavigne. Mr Alibi is a perfectly acceptable slice of teen heartache, complete with obligatory sing-along chorus (you can love it or hate it - either way it'll stick in your head...)

It's hardly going to set the world on fire, but at the same time it has a slightly more polished edge than a lot of pop out there at the minute, and it seems that Ms. Willson has indeed spent longer on the her songs than the majority of her peers. Mr Alibi won't make you tear your hair out, nor will it create despair about the state of the music industry. Instead, it is competently written guitar pop that your little niece will love.
