Mark Lanegan Band - Hit The City (Beggars Banquet)
UK release date: 8 November 2004
Mark Lanegan Band - Hit The City

Taken from the excellent if oddly monikered album Bubblegum, by the former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan, this is a darkly seductive salute to all things urban. Bass-led and urgent, peppered with back alley beats, his richly distinctive voice is echoed by the sublime PJ Harvey. Their duet is one of the most perfect stylistic pairings you're likely to listen to - their voices intertwining audaciously over insistent glittering guitars and powerful drumming.

Hit the City has a jet black, faintly apocalyptic vibe, with Lanegan murmuring about Kingdom Come and the Promised Land in that gruff, dusky voice so reminiscent of Tom Waits. It's the sound of city streets at 3am and neon reflected in rainwater: in short it's a wonderful aural introduction to one of the year's must-own albums.

The single is backed by two new Lanegan-penned tracks, Mud Pink Skag and Mirrored, both equally dark, sharp, brooding and nicotine flecked.
