Blimey. Just shows how wrong you can be. There I was, pen sharpened (all right, keyboard...errr... switched on) ready to pass withering judgement, and waddaya know, its Mark "Get Me Mate To Do Me Community Service" Morrison in decent record shock!
He's been a long time gone, but Marky Boy has a sharp-eye on what's gonna sell his come back as biographical details abound. Even if Backstabbers is a New Jack makeweight that belongs in 1988, Just A Man thankfully avoids the temptation to go all Dre and Jay-Z, sounding completely personal and homegrown.
Just A Man is a genuinely affecting plea for forgiveness ("There are some things in my life I'm ashamed of... / ... At the end of the day I'm just a man") sung and produced without a touch of syrup. It's (gulp!) grown-up stuff. Mark is still Leicester's number one Soul Brother, though admittedly there have been few contenders. The Mack, as it will inevitably be noted, has returned.
