"Tell her it's a lie before you make her cry", goes the chorus on The Marshals debut single. Why? Where's the fun in that? "Honey, before we start remember this is all a lie. I don't love you anymore, I hate your hair and your face makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty lemon zester. Oh, and last night I put your best dress and highest heels on and fellated the cat. Now, fancy a bite to eat?"...
Personally, it seems better to tell her, see if she cries, and then, if she does, tell her it was a lie. It's an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, dipped in an obscuring bog and fished out with a question.
Lucky then that the song is pretty fair. A bit gloomy, a bit spiky and cut through with a big central streak of bluesy despair, making the whole thing seem like the Editors dancing with the devil by the pale moonlight.
