Martin Gore - Loverman Ep

Depeche Mode meets Nick Cave... literally. While Dave Gahan is using the break from Depeche Mode tour duty to bring his own songwriting skills to the fore, Martin Gore seems intent on giving his a rest.

Loverman is another single from his second album of covers, and is a curious choice. Cave's original is one of his most visceral (and when Cave gets visceral it's not a pretty sight) and Gore's version is inevitably tame by comparison. On the plus side without all the howling you do get to hear the lyrics, always a bonus with Cave.

The result is odd but compelling, the raucous energy of the original contained in a gentler, housetrained format but the power of the lyrics keeping the nasty edge to the fore. It's as if your elegant Weimeraner suddenly took a chunk out of your leg.
