He of the Lexus ad (how much must he hate that reference?) returns with an internet-only single as a "thank you" to his fans whilst recording the follow-up to the surprisingly versatile Open Heart Zoo album.
I Am Chromosome may be grammatically challenged, but it's a revelation in terms of documenting personal turmoil within five minutes of music. There are twisted, quasi-underwater vocals; manic instrumentation that sounds like what alien machines would create if their only experience of human music was Nine Inch Nails; softly-spoken refrains of, "All my dreams are nightmares" and "Oh my son, how you disappoint me"; and a hurtling, screamed finale for good measure.
If this is a pointer for the new album then it is not going to be an opus for the faint-hearted. File under uneasy, but worthwhile, listening.
