Enough Cryin' is perfunctory, slickly-done R&B from the self-proclaimed Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. A light piano hovers gently over pounding drums, accompanied by synth flashes and dramatic strings, while the song centres itself around an evocative vocal from Blige.
One must speculate however, that all Mary J seems to do is cry, cry, cry and then moan about how she's cried enough and she's going to stop crying, the crying must cease, her crying days are over... Surely the sublime No More Drama album and accompanying single was evidence that the crying stopped there and she was moving on with her life, rather than constantly banging on about old hurts, old pains and old dramas.
But since then she's recycled the same ethos as before, constantly talking about how she's been hurt in the past but she's a soul survivor, and is going to... stop crying. Credit to Blige for still being the sharpest thing in contemporary R&B (with surely the best set of lungs), and her struggles and traumas of old have undoubtedly contributed to the woman she is today, but you just feel that she would be better served by carefree jams like the Dre-produced career zenith Family Affair than by the constant moans and mourns that she has built much of her career on.
