All hail Matthew Herbert, electronic music's most vivacious and versatile innovator for his ridiculously good new single, The Movers and The Shakers. Pulsating and infectious, this track is trademark Herbert with its highly complex, always intriguing mix of futuristic jazz, captivating orchestral electronica and deceptively barbed lyrics. Heavy on the disco-funk, The Movers and the Shakers will rock the floor beneath you and send tremors through your feet. It's music made for the heart and the head and you can ruminate on the intelligent, politicised lyrics while also throwing some gregarious shapes around the dance floor.
The second track, Harmonise, which features the slinky vocals of killer chanteuse Dani Siciliano is a little spooky, a little trippy and a little darker, with lyrics that feel like they are flowing straight from the pricked lips of a burlesque beauty riding on a carousel or swinging from a precarious glitter ball. It's slightly reminiscent of Moloko but then that's not surprising since Herbert produced Roisin Murphy's debut solo album. Nevertheless there's something playful and mischievous about this track and it has the same kind of dirty, seductive feel to it that you get when you walk into a club and know you are destined to get yourself a good time.
Together these two tracks are a great sample of Herbert's achievements and flair for experimental electronica. Miss this and you really do miss out.
