Max Sedgley - Happy
Thank God, they've finally released this - if only it means I probably won't have to hear it for much longer. An almost ubiquitous presence in any clubs with taste for the last year, it has also just sound-tracked the BBC's coverage of the European championship in the shape of its Spiritual South mix. So assuming that you haven't been living under a rock for the last year then you probably already know everything about this track that you need to.

Sampling huge swathes of Deodato and (i think) Eddie Kendricks to dance-floor devastating effect, the original is a nice little mid-paced Latin stomper with its call to arms brass section and parping horns keeping things fresh. We also have a selection of mixes to cover all bases: the aforementioned Spiritual South cut and paste the necessary bits onto a stomping Batucada rhythm, the long missing-in-action Fatboy Slim makes an unexpected return with what sounds like a seven year old b-side and Soul Mekanik chuck in some vocoders and lyrics for good measure.

All very nice but despite nearly a year of exposure to it, I'll still take the original over the remixes, though if I'm still saying that after a summer of every DJ from your bedroom hero to your Pete Tongs blasting it out then I may have a serious change of heart. Expect to see this tune re-issued every summer with the latest Judge Jules, Belgium waffle-core mix or whatever is de rigour that season. Inescapable.
