McFly - Don't Stop Me Now/Please Please (Universal)
UK release date: 17 July 2006
With every charity telethon there is an inevitable accompanying single. This time round, Sport Relief has brought the boyband of the moment on board in the hope of getting the British public to raid its piggybanks. McFly have responded with not one song, but two.
The first is Don't Stop Me Now, the official Sport Relief anthem and a cover of the classic Queen hit from 1979. The lads give it their own treatment without straying too far from the original. It's a fun romp, but it does suffer slightly from the inevitable comparison. Queen purists will wince but, considering what could have been done to it, it's relatively pleasing on the ears.
The second is Please Please and comes from the soundtrack to Just My Luck in which McFly appear as themselves alongside Lindsay "I did not sleep with McFly" Lohan. The music was one the film's saving graces and this is them at their best, good old catchy foot tapping pop. Co-written by them, it's a far cry from some of the tat their contemporaries churn out.
Having been viewed with scorn by the industry this should take the heat off them. Simply because its aimed at the teenage market doesn't mean it has to be bad. This will have their existing fans jumping for joy and should win them new ones as well. If you're one of those people who can't take artists seriously until they hit 40, well... it's for charity dammit. Now open that wallet!!
