Mercury Rev know how to make a comeback. Just as their fellow New Yorkers MGMT appeared to have successfully swiped their 'ethereal, slightly psychedelic, pop' mantle and sold it as their own, back come the old masters with a song that sounds...well, nothing like Mercury Rev.
Senses On Fire is, frankly, slightly bonkers. It sounds enormous, with synths swirling everywhere, before setting off on a very Chemical Brothers direction with Jonathan Donahue softly reciting the title. Then, halfway through, it all stops and Donahue bellows "ready or not, here I come" through a distorted vocal effect, before setting the controls for the heart of the sun again, with the hypnotic vocal hook really getting its claws into you.
It's miles away from the dreamy beauty of All Is Dream or Deserter's Songs, and it's a typically perverse choice of single, but it certainly whets the appetite for upcoming album Snowflake Midnight and its free to download companion piece Strange Attractor.
