A couple of years ago, the British went mad for all things Canadian. The Wainwrights, Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, every act that came over from the land of the Maple Leaf seemed blissfully cool, esoteric and marvellously listenable.

Metric are friends with Broken Social Scene (indeed, lead singer Emily Haines does guest vocals on perhaps their finest moments, Anthem For A Seventeen Year Old Girl) and continue the Canuck tradition of excellence. Empty starts off all quiet and whispery for a few minutes, before exploding into a barrage of noise halfway through, and then calming down again for a synth-accompanied ending. Emily Haines could recite a list of cooking ingredients and make it sound like the most seductive thing you've ever heard, and she's suitably heart-melting here.

It may not grab you by the scruff of the neck like their previous single Monster Hospital did, but here's more proof that Metric are amongst Canada's finest bands.
