This is going to split people down the middle. My Heart Rate Rapid could be described as one of the most unusual and original sounding dance songs for some time. Alternatively it could be described as one of the most annoying fucking things you've ever heard.
A rinky-dink keyboard line drives the song along in a manner of speaking. It's the kind of sound you would associate with that few seconds between feeling a little bit unwell and spraying the pavement with the contents of your stomach. A few random twangs, and then the beat cuts in, making everything alright again. Oh, but then there's the high pitched vocals that sound a little like a chorus of retarded munchkins. Frankly, if you caught My Heart Rate Rapid in the wrong frame of mind, it could easily push you over the edge into a breakdown or at the very least a life of deviance.
Trying to work out whether this is a work of danceable genius is hard as there as many things about it that are great (the quirkiness of it all) as there are bad (the quirkiness of it all). At times it sounds as if Metronomy are trying to hard to sound awkward when they should just let things flow.
Also included is Matthias Gathering which finds the band exploring some fairly dated synth sounds. At least it hangs together a little better that Rapid and doesn't seek to irritate you straight off the bat.
