Matthew Herbert certainly has a talent for seeking out eclectic, leftfield pop artists. After producing Roisin Murphy's debut album and introducing us to the talents of Dani Siciliano, his new protege is 21 year old Mica Levi.
Golden Phone sounds, in the nicest possible way, like four separate tracks all being played at once. There's a near constant loop of Micachu's voice, weirdly eerie electro bleeps, handclaps, an urgent throbbing bass sound, and every so often, what sounds like a keyboard being dropped on the floor and jumped upon.
Yet this isn't experimentation for experimentation's sake. There's some genuine pop nous here, helped along by Micachu's warm voice and the naggingly catchy melody. Don't expect to tap your feet easily along to Golden Phone, but it's a promising sign for the future. Pop, but not as we know it.
