Formed in Los Angeles in 2002, Midnight Movies offer a kind of arty, almost pretentious but still interesting space-pop. The psychedelic tint of the music makes them stand out amongst many of their LA peers, regardless of genre - hence their current road to success and much acclaim.
It's certainly rare to see a drummer and lead female vocalist in Gena Olivier who offers an irresistible, slightly eerie but calm texture to Mirage. Guitarist Larry Schemel and keyboardist/guitarist Jason Hammons also star - they manage to strike out electronic beats, soft riffs with infectious melodies that give the band a distinctive vibe. There are two accompanying tracks here of similar quality.
Mirage is taken from their forthcoming self-titled debut release. The song of itself is actually rather cinematic, a wonderfully layered tune that could be played over the L.A landscape in a contemporary surrealist picture. At the behest of a cliché, this is one movie you should catch.
