As undoubtably the pre-eminent female rapper in the world right now, and creator of one of the best pop songs of recent years in Get Your Freak On, Missy Elliott's forthcoming Greatest Hits album is already destined to be one of the year's biggest sellers.
Taken from Missy's last album The Cookbook, We Run This is built around a sample of the Sugarhill Gang's Apache, and is a typically inventive, energetic number. The background vocals conjure up a party atmosphere, and the sample works well, although it does start to sound a bit too busy at times.
It doesn't have the class of Get Your Freak On or some of Missy's other finest moments, but its still a superior piece of hip-hop/R&B. At a time when the genre seems to be dominated by so many faceless characters, Missy's personality-filled music is a breath of fresh air.
