Moby & Public Enemy - Make Love F**k War (Mute)

release date: 26 July 2004
Moby & Public Enemy - Make Love F**k War
Ladies and gents, we know we live in apocalyptic times when world events are serious enough to steer Moby away from selling his tunes to advertising and to disturb the legendary Chuck D and Flava Flav from whatever it is they do with their time these days. All facetiousness aside, however, the coupling of these heavyweights of dance and hip-hop should lead to explosive results and MKLVFKWR (that's the official, child-friendly song title) is certainly that, though not quite in the way you might expect.

The music is old skool and at the uplifting end of the Moby spectrum, with hard-hitting beats, scratching and guitar squiggles that add to the funkiness. Chuck D's bully-boy rapping is as direct as ever with juicy sound-bites like "power to the people because the people want peace", "capitalists, communists, terrorists - I swear to God I don't know the difference" and the particulary fine "grand theft oil's gonna bleed us".

However, what's surprising is the constant exhortation to "put your hands in the ay-er!" which makes the whole thing boppy in a "Boom! Shake shake shake the room!" kinda way. Let's hope Moby & Public Enemy's insurrection is as catching as it is catchy.
