The Modern - Suburban Culture (Pie & Mash)
release date: 14 June 2004
The Modern - Suburban Culture

So here we have the latest sharply dressed contenders for this years electro-pop crown with their debut single Suburban Culture, which is slightly unnecessarily presented here in four different mixes. None of the mixes is radically different from each other, a slight squelch here, a Kraftwerk melody there, but none deviating too far from the catchy '80s pop at the heart of this tune.

And as tunes go it's not a bad effort, despite or perhaps because of it wearing its influences on its well tailored sleeves so blatantly. There's a hint of Visage in the girl/boy vocals, a dash of Duran Duran's stadium pop pomposity and an almighty slice of The Cure, with certain sections of the song sounding like they had been lifted straight from their 1980 hit A Forest.

But genius steals, as the saying goes, and The Modern pull off this ram raid on synth pop's rich history with some aplomb. An album is set to follow later this year and on this showing I'll be waiting to hear it with much interest.
