It's been a busy old time for everyone's favourite Scottish post-rockers, Mogwai. The release of their second single from Mr.Beast comes on the back of the release of a movie about French footballer Zinedine Zidane for which they supplied the soundtrack, and before one of their biggest gigs ever, at the Royal Albert Hall in September.
Travel Is Dangerous is brooding and gloomy, in many ways the archetypal Mogwai track. It ebbs and flows, in the quiet-loud-quiet vein that has been a staple of the Glasgow band, and has a heavy chorus with lashings of those trademark punishing guitars. All put together it sounds pretty impressive, but would you expect anything less from a band whose work seems to go from strength to strength just when you think it couldn't get any better.
What's more, this EP is excellent value for money. As well as the title track, also thrown in are remixes of Auto Rock by Mogwai's excellent up and coming electronica stablemates at Rock Action, Errors, and Friend of the Night by Acid Casuals. Plus there are live versions of old favourite Like Herod and We're No Here, both recorded in Japan. What more could you ask for? A quality cover perhaps? How does a dog dressed as Yoda grab you?
