Morning Runner are in a league of their own. The Reading band, newly signed to Parlophone, have a wintery yet incendiary indie sound that has been likened to Coldplay but truly they are nothing like each other - as this EP shows.
Opening track Work is a bolshy call to arms with vocalist Matt Greener's inflammatory singing rising up to the rafters. He sings like a shy man who we catch unawares as he stomps about his own room. The smooth crispness of his voice hooks you up by the ears if they weren't pricked up already by the combination of bold keyboards and lightning guitar strums.
Second track Hold Your Breath is one long melodic sigh, taking the tempo down to 'chilled yet thrilled' mode as Greener's melancholy warbles over dusty rhythms. Third track It's Not Like Everyone's My Friend is back to the explosive big sound that Morning Runner achieve with such cool propensity. Hardly ever has a spleen been vented with such understated aggression and poetic eloquence.
If these three songs are a taster of what Morning Runner has in store for us then they're a preamble to something very great indeed.
