2004 has certainly been Morrissey's year, with the high quality of You Are The Quarry meaning he strode back into the limelight like an old friend. Let Me Kiss You, recently covered by Nancy Sinatra on her comeback album, was one of the many highlights of the album and is deservedly being released as a single.
It may not possess the energy or pace that Irish Blood English Heart or First Of The Gang To Die had in spades, but this is still classic Mozza. An effortlessly swooning song, this features the man himself begging, in almost self-parodic fashion, for his love to be requited: "so close your eyes, and think of someone you physically admire, and let me kiss you" must go down as one of the lyrics of year.
Of course it doesn't quite work out ("so you open your eyes and see someone you physically despise"), but that's why we love him. Some may feel that such blatant self-pity is unbecoming and slightly worrying in a man of Morrissey's age, but we all know his tongue is firmly planted in his cheek. Isn't it?
