A new Morrissey single still produces a frisson of excitement, and You Have Killed Me is no exception. Teamed up again with regular producer Tony Visconti, this is the first offering from the forthcoming album recorded in Rome.
It's what's termed a 'grower'. Initially, it disappoints, especially after the huge wallop that Irish Blood, English Heart packed, sounding rather like Moz on auto-pilot. Yet after repeated listens, it slowly begins to reveal its charms - and most surprisingly, the world's most famous celibate seems to have suddenly become all sex-obsessed ("Nothing entered me, 'til you came with the key")
The huge chorus saves the song, but it's still Morrissey by numbers. The good news is that we've heard the forthcoming album and it makes a lot more sense in that context. After all, Morrissey remains the only person in the world to get away with opening a song with "Pasolini is me, Accatone you'll be" and we should treasure him for that.
