Tynemouth three-piece The Motorettes "believe in the raw power and beauty of rock and roll" - assumedly a statement aiming to show that they are not like everybody else. New single I Am Blisters, I Am, from the band's self-titled debut album, is a bit like your average page three girl. It's nice, but that's all there is to say.
Beginning with triple-pronged vocals, all chanting "this is a love song", we quickly descend into gigantically melodic punk riffs. In fact, close your eyes and you could be forgiven for thinking we were about to break into My Chemical Romance floor-filler I'm Not OK. Although perfectly pleasant, the instrumental work is too close to the vocals, which are themselves awkward staccatos, backed with meticulous but ineffective harmonies.
Clearly, this three-and-a-half minute affair is trying to stick to the basics. Lyrically, nothing much needs to be read into "I am so into you, oh yeah", and structurally the song never changes gear. What we are ultimately presented with is a perfectly suitable "rock" singalong, with nothing left over to feed the imagination.
