The Motorettes/Kubichek! - Relax It's The '80s/Opening Shot (Kitchenware)
UK release date: 17 July 2006
In these days of Razorlight's fued with The Kooks, Kasabian having a pop at Franz Ferdinand and Lily Allen slagging off...well, everyone by the looks of it, it's nice to see two bands working together for the common good.
North-east indie-rockers The Motorettes have teamed up with fellow Geordies Kubichek! to release this split EP. The Motorettes kick things off with the fast and furious Relax It's The 80s featuring a spiralling guitar lick, a chorus to bellow along to and an uncanny similarity to early Feeder. Kubichek!'s effort, Opening Shot, is your typical North-East punky pop, right down to the abrasive guitars and the lead singer's Geordie-accented vocals.
To continue the love in, both bands cover one of the other's songs as well, with The Motorettes taking on Kubichek!'s Stutter and Kubichek! contributing their version of The Motorettes' We Are Solution. While there's absolutely nothing original here, it's a good listen and the co-operation is a welcome breath of fresh air in the increasingly back-biting world of indie.
