Mozez - Feel Free

Mozez's voice is extremely powerful. I saw him once on stage with Zero 7, for whom he regularly does guest vocals, and he blew me away. Who can forget the sweeping vocals on I Have Seen or This World?

Well, the man himself has finally stepped in to hog the limelight with some solo material, and this track is taken from his debut album So Still. Some critics are already touting him as a potential heir to Marvin Gaye, so I was eager to give this a listen. Sadly, I was left a little disappointed by what appears to be an over-produced single. On most Gaye tracks the instrumentation took second place to the amazing vocals. Here, both musicians and singer appear to be on an even keel. I'd much rather have heard more of Mozez on this track and have had the sampler and percussion well and truly in the background. This guy has got an amazing voice but it feels buried here.

The over production makes this feel too average, and something with a great deal of potential looks condemned to an easy listening station's playlist. It's a shame; if there were any justice in the world, this track would have more balls than that.
