If Mujaji's On a Bridge Between Clouds sounds familiar, it's probably because, as the band's official website proudly boasts, the band has been providing background musak to more than 3500 retail outlets since January. The chains, including branches of M&S and Hobbes, are conspicuously at the more middle-class end of the market, and it's easy to see how this gentle ambience would sit comfortably next to Air or Lemon Jelly at upmarket summer 'festivals' such as the Grolsch Summer Set.
None of this should be held (too strongly) against it, though. Taken from the album of the same name, currently available as download-only in the UK, On A Bridge Between Clouds is a great slice of atmospheric, gentle trip-hop from the now UK based Brooklyn brothers. Setting this apart from some of their previous efforts are the breathy vocals of Norwegian singer-songwriter Maria Solheim, overlaying their psychedelic electronica with touch of a Björk-meets-St Etienne that complements it perfectly.
It may not be rock'n'roll, but it's pleasant, surprisingly catchy and, unexpectedly, sounds much better played at higher volume. After 10 years of trying, Mujaji are probably due for a hit and if subliminal advertising does lead the nation's shoppers pied-piper-like from the M&S knicker rack to the HMV next door, it will be no more than they deserve.
