Named after the villain in 1980s animated series Thundercats, new five-piece Mumm-Ra deliver their debut EP off the back of a stint supporting the highly rated Fields and it is a release that shows some promise.

Opener Song B is a song that retains the listener's interest throughout, going through various changes from the explosion of noise at the start, being quite punky in phases in its guitar-led and very deliberately sung lyrical fashion, to the surprise introduction of horns towards the end. Final track The Temple also contains a brass finale, although like There She Is remains fairly forgettable indie fodder for the most part. Light Up This Room however impresses - this eerie acoustic number with echoes of Warp act Gravenhurst about it being a plea for help, as demonstrated in the line "you don't seem to care so I'm drinking myself to the floor."

The 21-year-olds from the sleepy retirement town of Bexhill on Sea have got a busy summer ahead of themselves, following up their appearance at T in the Park with further festival outings at Oxygen, Latitude, Reading, Leeds, and the Fuji Rock festival in Japan. And those who happen to catch a glimpse of them will witness quite a varied set if Black Hurts Day And The Night Rolls On is a marker.
