Would you believe that this isn't a cover version of Def Leppard's (cough) classic '80s album title track?! Mind you with Muse anything is possible, as this track aptly demonstrates.

Whoever is choosing the singles from the rather wondrous Absolution album has their ears tuned to the right frequency because alongside Stockholm Syndrome and Time Is Running Out, Hysteria is a sparkling jewel in a treasure chest of other gems.

Hysteria has all the elements of a great rock song (fuzzy bass-line; stomping drums; toned and honed guitar riffs; and a fist-pumping chorus) and other things besides (a clever, space-age guitar solo). In fact, the result is so mesmerising that when Matt Bellamy sings, "Give me your heart and soul," you're almost tempted to obey. It should be the Christmas Number One but it won't be. Go figure.
