There's a ready and waiting fan base for a band like My Sad Captains, especially when they name influences such as Grandaddy and The Flaming Lips. Comparisons of that calibre are often unfounded, but every listen to the band's new double A-side single convinces you that these Londoners could just have something here.
It may be slightly lacking in originality, nodding hugely to the quaintness of the massive Scandanavian indie scene, but All Hat And No Plans pins its success on the happy-go-lucky backing vocals and pitter-patter of xylophone. The muffled trumpet at the end makes for a nice treat as well.
Great Expectations is a better song, with a simple picked guitar making it a great summer track - think of The Magic Numbers having a picnic with the Polyphonic Spree. It's simple, and maybe even a little unimaginative, but it's very pleasing in the scorching summer heat. And if the heat stays for the next few months, expect this lot to be big festival favourites this year.
