Brooklyn five-piece The National have spent the last two years quietly, but steadily, chipping away at the block of musical anonymity. Their rise to the forefront of both the US and UK music scenes mirrors the sound they make: subtle and unpretentious.
Apartment Story is The National's latest single. A chugging rhythm section is lamented upon with beautiful vocal melodies and poetic lyrics that muse "It's so disarming, darling, everything we did believe is diving off the balcony".
Berninger's baritone vocal delivery is something to fall in love with. Moody but beautiful. Laced with melody, but understated. The National make poignant music that is in no rush to win fans with overdone riffs and tried and tested formulas. Ironic then, that with Apartment Story, winning over fans is exactly what The National will do.
