McSweeney's debut single, Postcards, caused a quiet stir when it was released earlier this year, earning support on major radio playlists and among independent music retailers. His follow up, A Rope To Hang, will further bolster McSweeney's sombre folk music towards the recognition it deserves.
With nothing but gentle, haunting guitar accompaniment, McSweeney's wholesome voice floats eerily, telling campfire stories of life and love. The mix is dry, and warm, the song brooding, his voice compelling.
A Rope To Hang's beauty is in its earthly simplicity, void of all trickery and multi-instrumental shenanigans it is wonderfully organic. However, b-side, Chinese Cargo, evidences Mcweeney's ability to bring a range of instruments together with the same end product: beautiful, memorable folk songs laced with Americana that are grabbing and unrelenting. A Rope To Hang is digital release only. Best fetch those iWallets.
