You've got to hand it to Nelly; he's pioneering the art of plunging to new depths. There's no subject too shallow, no rhyme too cringeworthy, no video too preposterous for this fella. His music makes 50 Cent's Window Shopper look like a poignant social commentary, and he's proud of it.
With the brave intention of making Grillz the most spectacularly meaningless song in his spectacuarly meaningless discography, Nelly turns his attention here to the gritty subject of dental jewellery - a subject close to all our hearts. "Open up ya mouth, ya grill gleamin' (say what) / Eyes stay low from da chiefin'," moans the female presence, whose later appearance at the chorus betrays a lack of vocabulary masked by the interminably clever: "Yup, ya grill, yup yup, ya grill."
The fact that this all goes down without the slightest discernable nod or wink suggests to me that Nelly's opulent lifestyle is more than his iced-out head can absorb. Give him a minimalist beat and he'll soon be rapping about McCain Micro Chips, wicker chairs and boxer shorts. There's no topic too insipid.
