As the dodgy europop synths commence I Told Her On Alderaan, the latest offering from Boom Bip and Gruff Rhys, it does not bode well for anything more than a tacky, rehashed 80s dance pop listen.
But give it a few listens and the unashamed radio-friendly pop are etched into your brain. Rhys' voice is great, even if the patterning of the chorus is a little annoying. The grittier 'b-side', Trick For Treat, sees Spank Rock and filth-merchant Har Mar Superstar guest on a dirty electro-rap stomper. As expected, Boom Bip's production is clean and crispy on both tracks.
It's all a bit of a guilty pleasure, and though it works very well as a tongue-in-cheek cheap thrill, given the weight of Gruff Rhys as a musician, and songwriter, we might have expected something a little more credible from his foray into electronica.
