Nerina Pallot's music is, in a word, understated. Standing in between her previous singles (the trite Everybody's Gone To War and the unsurpassed subtle Sophia), Learning To Breathe is Pallot's third offering from her Gold certified debut Fires.
And while I stand by the description of her music as understated, I hasten to explain that I do not mean that it should be held in higher esteem than it is, I mean that it is discreet, modest and extremely inconspicuous. Should Learning To Breathe come on the radio, your first thought would not be "wow" or anything of the sort, but nothing, since I doubt you would even notice it.
Think of Missy Higgins (who, incidentally, Pallot has toured with) or The Fray. That is not to say the track isn't good; on the contrary, it's a lovely song that whilst doesn't come close to matching the effortlessly beautiful Sophia, is still deservedly a very likeable track that will undoubtedly slip through your ears and onto your tongue after only a few listens.
It certainly won't change your life, but maybe, for the few minutes it lasts, will add a little bit of optimism instead.
