The New Shapes - You've Got Me Running Around (Pop)
UK release date: 15 August 2005
First single from The New Shapes You've Got Me Running Around harks back
to those heady days of The Vines and The Von Bondies of three
of four years ago. But that's a world away from today's 80s revivalist
musical landscape, so this song sounds dangerously outdated to start with,
but worse, it's devoid of any proper musical depth, and labours over a
lyrical theme expressing "the worries and woes of the suburban
generation".
All of which leaves you with a distinctly empty feeling and the
impression that The New Shapes are almost certainly not destined for
greatness. There are plenty of meatier, more fulfilling, fresher new
bands around, and you'd be well advised to skip this low calorie, vegan
alternative and opt for one of the fillet steaks of 2005 - Bloc Party,
Editors or the Arcade Fire, for example.
A more appropriate name for The New Shapes might be The Self-Consciously
Retro, Slightly Irrelevant Shapes, but then that wouldn't be nearly so
obviously ironic or boringly unoriginal. Unfortunately, this band are
both of those things.
