Hot on the heels of a storming tour (if the gig we
caught at Brixton Academy is anything to go by) Nine
Inch Nails are back with Survivalism, the first single
taken from their new album Year Zero, due out on 16
April.
Described as "[an album] that began as an
experiment with noise on a laptop and led to a
daydream about the end of the world," Survivalism is,
perhaps surprisingly, more upbeat and commercially
tuneful than some of Trent Reznor's previous work,
with a good repetitive intro riff and almost a dance
influence coming through in the background
electronics. Not to mention no rude words to keep it
away from the radio.
It's still unmistakably Nine Inch Nails though,
industrial soundscapes and heavy beats to carry you
into the night, a familiar noise to soundtrack your
fears of the future. The combination bodes well for
the album: if all its 16 tracks are as good as this,
then we're in for a treat.
