Okay, for those of you who don't possess internet connection, a radio or even a pair of ears, here's the gen on this dreadful song. Warwickshire-based duo Luke Concannon and John Parker, wrote it about Luke's childhood memory of his dad picking him up from school in a giant digger when he was five.
So far, so cute. The single has since been marketed on the internet by a cool animation which looks like a kid's drawing but is actually quite a sophisticated cartoon. The word of mouth this generated, coupled with airtime on Radio 2 and XFM has multiplied to such proportions that it's now odds-on to be Christmas number one.
While it's a heartwarming story, the fact remains that this is a novelty record and novelty records are by nature, very catchy and consequently, very irritating. JCB Song is no different. While not a manufactured pop song, it's horribly... well, wet. As if our odds of a white Christmas weren't long enough. And don't be fooled that it's for kids - what five year old nowadays is going to know who BA Baracas or Bruce Lee is? It's for thirty somethings wanting to remember when good was easily discernable from evil and life wasn't tainted by horrible cynics who can't even see the good in a heartwarming song about a JCB. Ah....
