Hot on the tails of their Diesel Best Urban music award and LP release, drum and bass innovators obedientbone proffer their first single and this baby catches fire the moment it hits the laser.
The sub-eighties bass pounds in and with it a kicking beat that propels. Demelza sets the tone with a stroppy vocal, a marked diversion from her sometimes wistful approach, and as the chorus crashes in the listener is reminded that this if not your ordinary club dnb. It's less formulaic but in some ways poppier, punkier, The Sex Pistols meets Tricky, with its perfection of pop sensibility yet a hardness inherent to rock n roll. Demelza's lyrical fluidity maintains the swell and this tune rides it in perfection, as does the re-working of the classic Tendril, defying complacency with a beautiful aggression. The programming and sound treatments also feel more organic than a lot of dnb, which can be dry in its overuse of the same sounds. However, obedientbone create their own and this adds depth, colour and a sound very much theirs.
This band are on the up in a major way. They innovate and they excite and are playing in London next month. Check 'em you must.
