Not ones to do things by half, Oceansize are well known for creating
some of the most expansive progged out rock known to man. They tend to
pepper their songs with abrupt time changes and roaring guitars that
give the quieter sections a jolt in the loud direction. Not so on New
Pin.
"What junkie says, is not what junkie do," sings Mike Vennart, and
if you didn't know better, you'd have to assume junkie wrote New Pin.
It's a moody slice of prog that barely lifts its head above the parapet,
preferring to nod out gently than rock out disgracefully.
In fact it's a strange choice for a single, because for all the
immaculately layered vocals and hypnotic guitar lines, it never really
explodes like you know it wants to. If you weren't waiting for the song to
build to a shattering climax, New Pin could well pass you by. B-side
Superfluous to Requirements revisits the dynamics we expect from
Oceansize with crazed vigour, and is therefore, despite the title, the real
reason to grab this single.
