Sometimes the difference between hype and reality is enough to make you question your sanity. After reading a great deal about Official Secrets Act I was expecting something approaching the next coming.
Best art pop song since Common People? "Most lyrically erudite band I've ever heard" reckons Steve Lamacq - but then Richey did have to spell "For Real" with a 4 for him. What's going on?
So we're finally getting around to listening to Official Secrets Act and fingers are trembling as the CD starts to spin. Is this going to be the greatest thing we've heard in many a year?
Sorry to break the news, but Jesus and his merry band of men ain't appearing this Christmas - reports of a second coming are a little premature. What we have here is a pretty decent pop record. There are clever lyrics sure, but nothing where it seems as if the band are channelling your thoughts, or the thoughts of the nation's youth. A great chorus too, but somehow the recording sounds thin, it needs a bit more bottom end to really kick in and make you feel it.
The likes of The Killers and Franz Ferdinand spring to mind, and that's no bad thing. Official Secrets Act is obviously pretty handy at writing a good pop tune. It's just lacking, ultimately it's bland, but you never know there's enough good stuff going on to suggest they're capable of better things.
