That their band name stems from a Morrissey song title is only half the story. The Ordinary Boys write similar social commentary lyrics, but their sound smacks of a vivacious Blur. This isn't surprising though, for the band have been holed up with Blur and Smiths producer Stephen Street.
Week In Week Out, the second single off their as-yet-untitled album (out in June), snarls at a humdrum culture obsessed with celebs and the lottery. With bold guitars and feisty singing, the song is fresh with youthful protest. The Brighton four-piece aren't just arty hairdos and faux angst - this is the real thing.
But the brassy single is also a let-down. The lyrics control the song, with a half-baked melody acting merely as a backdrop. A bit of fine-tuning, though, and this band will have it made.
