Orenda Fink is probably best known as one half as Azure Ray, but with the duo seemingly now defunct, Orenda Fink has gone it alone. Bloodline is taken from her beautiful album Invisible Ones, a record that was influenced by her travels around the world, in particular visits to Haiti and India.
While the album was full to the brim with sincere and intellecual tunes, Bloodline always stood out as a song that would most suit the single format. Starting with a spidery guitar line that wouldn't be out of place on one of Fugazi's more subdued songs, Bloodline is wonderfully understated. The instrumentation takes a back seat to let Orenda's voice take over. She's almost gothic in her delivery - at the very least she can make a song sound haunting and charming, even when the subject matter is pricking your conscience.
It's rare to find lyrics like; "Slave Plantation, got a lot of grass / It was my own temptation, but hey, you made a lot of cash," anywhere these days, let alone to have them swelling with a strange kind of beauty. This is a great single; clever and affecting. As part of the whole album, it's even better.
