Formed in 2001 in western Canada, The Organ are an all-female five-piece in the mould of a 21st century Joy Division, The Cure or The Smiths - much like a darker incarnation of their Canuck contemporaries Tegan & Sara. But with more members. And more black t-shirts.
Brother trundles along on the kind of Cure-esque bassline and Johnny Marr-style jabbed guitar harmonics with which The Stills traded so successfully a couple of years ago. Lead singer and driving force Katie Sketch is very much the fairer sex's answer to Morrissey, relating tales of pain and angst in that strangely winding, conversational style. I guarantee it's as good as I've made it sound.
As an extra incentive to get off your arse - as if one was needed - Brother's B-side is the rather beautiful Love Love Love, taken from a live BBC 6 Gideon Coe session late last year. As well as an opportunity for Sketch to showcase her considerable, inimitable vocals, it's a delicate testiment to The Organ's versatility and a tantalising preview of their forthcoming Grab That Gun LP. What is it with Canada and its glut of great contemporary artists? There must be something in the water...
