Grimsby three-piece Orphan Boy ought to sound dated, dwelling in the disaffected, anguished punk that was perfected by the Sex Pistols what feels like a century ago. Yet somehow they don't, and with Postcode we are presented with a work that could very well prove to be a sleeping giant.
Beginning (and ending) with a menacing thud, fuzzing guitar and the drawling vocal of Paul Smith, a sombre tone is set amidst a wash of feedback. Smith mutters "it all goes quiet on you", and sure enough the song becomes silent. But then something very interesting happens.
A deep, grinding guitar sound surges into life, and suddenly you realise that this no mere interpretation of a style long accomplished. The undertone of this track becomes unmistakably grungey, and although the beat takes on clear punk reference, the combination remains intriguing to say the least.
The key hook. "I got the noose made out for you," is sure to stick itself into the mind, even if the overall melody here leaves something to be desired. You cannot quite avoid the sense that Orphan Boy really mean business, and ultimately that is what will cause the public to sit up and take notice.
