Parka - Disco Dancer

A single by a band called Parka hardly promises much, conjuring up images of a bunch of Oasis-aping goons swaggering around like it's 1996. Fortunately, those initial fears are way off.

Disco Dancer starts out like any other record by any other band at the moment seems to. Yelped vocals are backed by an explosion of angular guitars and post-punk rhythms, and one starts to wonder if there is an actual band behind this, or just a wily producer that's sampled bits of Franz, The Cribs, Editors, Razorlight, etc to create a hit single. But then the chorus kicks in, and laughs in the face of hard-nosed cynicism. It's mighty, built for no-brain boozy singalongs and takes the song to a level it seemed incapable of reaching. Before you know it, you're humming it.

Brazenly unoriginal, Parka probably don't stand much of a chance of setting themselves apart from all the other identikit indie bands around. Shame, as they've come up with a cracking single.
