Two albums down, and this single heralds the impending arrival of number three from French middle of the road triers Phoenix. On this evidence, it seems quite likely that Phoenix might actually make something of an impression this time around.
There's an odd verse that comprises little more than a simple backbeat, a keyboard stab that seems to swing in and out of time at will, and Thomas Mars' gentle vocals that call to mind the phrasing of Sting in his pomp. The saving grace however comes at the chorus that shows off a 'radio-old' friendly savvy that should see them right.
"It's never been like that, it's never been like that" chants Mars in something a style that threatens to push Phoenix away from their soft rock leanings and towards the grittier aesthetics of New Wave. Of course being a pop song at heart, it isn't long before he dissolves back into something altogether more comfortable. Which is a shame really, but at least it shows that Phoenix do at least have a little bit of a glint in the eye. As it is, this is the kind of thing that they play at drive time to ensure that road rage incidents are less likely. Fairly innocuous stuff, but with enough bite where it counts to keep you distracted from the bloke with the caravan who refuses to indicate.
