The Polyphonic Spree - Hanging Around (679)
release date: October 21 2002
The Polyphonic Spree - Hanging Around
The Polyphonic Spree are, frankly, terrifying. No less than twenty four, white-clad grinning figures beam out from the cover of this single and it's difficult not to think "religious cult". Or words to that effect.

As we all know however, you shouldn't judge on appearances. Hanging Around has a huge, life enhancing chorus which is impossible to listen to without a silly grin on your face. Frontman Tim DeLaughter has a similar ‘love it or hate it' voice to Jonathan Donaghue of Mercury Rev. With its flutes and The Mamas And Papas' sound, it actually all gets a bit twee towards the end, but it makes for a diverting listen.

Like a huge chocolate cake, too much of this would make you feel sick, but it's perfectly digestible in small doses. Just don't stop to talk to them in the middle of town.
