This four piece are currently garnering a fair amount of attention. You know the kind of thing; Kelly Osbourne pops along to hang out with you; Gina from The Raincoats nips into the studio to video your progress, and everyone seems to be climbing over each other to hurl superlatives at you. Not bad going when you're four teenage girls (14-15 no less).
None of this means a thing of course if your songs aren't up to much. As luck would have it Poppy and the Jezebels seem to have a nice line in great poppy ditties. Nazi Girls is nowhere near as provocative as the title might suggest, instead a fine example of how sometimes, less is more. In essence it's little more than a very basic percussive riff, driven along by some very rudimentary drums and keyboards, and yet there's charm dripping from the track. At times it does just sound the kind of band you might have been in at school. Everyone just picks an instrument that they think they might be able to play and then attempts to bang out a tune to fit the lyrics they scribbled down behind the bike sheds whilst toking on a crafty fag.
After all there may be no other explanation for "Nazi girls, left right left - HALT!" On the other hand, the enthusiasm and exuberance is there in evidence, and Mollie Kingsley Jezebel's occasionally monotone vocals remind us fondly of Polly Styrene. Nazi Girls definitely shows a band with considerable promise.
